Bats are often seen as villains when it comes to outbreaks of zoonotic diseases, or diseases that can pass between animals and humans (think: Ebola, coronaviruses, rabies, etc.…) However, despite carrying numerous diseases, they can far outlive mammals of similar size. This is attributed in a large part to their resistance to illnesses caused by viruses, cancer, and the aging process.

It is suspected that the key to their longevity lies in unique genetic adaptations that guide their immune response and improve DNA repair at a cellular level. Ongoing research seeks to understand if these genetic mechanisms in bats could lay the groundwork for developing cancer treatments and responding to future outbreaks of zoonotic diseases.
