Feel the burn

Continuing on the theme of summer vacation hazards, the very product that vacationers apply to their skin to protect themselves against the sun's rays at the beach may also be contributing to the demise of the very coral they are visiting the sea to see.

Runoff polluted with numerous chemicals and byproducts including the usual suspects (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, microplastics, oil-based products, etc.) is exacerbating the destruction of coral reefs wrought by increasing oceanic temperatures. However, UV filters used in sunscreen are also among them.

Presumably this refers to industrial grade pollution rather than residue from frolicking beachgoers. Still, sunscreen must be industrially produced before it is casually applied.
